Hi all,
I am organizing a presentation and discussion of Classic Lego for
BrickFest, being held this July in the Washington, D.C. area. My plan is to
cover sets and topics through the 'non-moving' minifig era. This can include
old town/train sets, Hobby sets, HO scale lego, old/rare promotional sets, etc.
I think demos of the evolution of the Lego brick and other parts over time
would be very interesting as well.

I would like to find out the following:
1. Are there specific topics anyone is interested in hearing about?
2. Is anyone interested in leading discussion/presentation on any particular
topic?
3. Who can contribute sets and/or parts for display? I can bring my items, but
many of my old sets are currently in use in a museum display.

Please contact me by email at rrg@pha.jhu.edu if you're interested.

Thanks!
Roy Gal

Hey,

This sounds interesting.  Wish I was going to be there.  Maybe it's going
away from your theme, but one suggestion would be to look at the evolution
of the fig.  Previous people built with bricks, to the "homemaker" people:
http://guide.lugnet.com/set/200_1
to the minifigs with no arms or moving legs, to the classic smiley, to the
multitude of faces we have today.  Also the off-shoot Fabuland and Duplo and
Creator/Jack Stone figs could be discussed.

Another issue of interest to me is the question of scale.  Skimming through
old sets, it seems like scale is all over the place.  Then with the
evolution of the minifig scale gets fixed to that size (except for Technic,
Model Team, SW UCS sets, etc).  What are the implications of using one
particular scale.

Another issue I could think of is the issue of instructions.  In my first
set (111, Universal Building Set (I think)) there were no instructions, but
instead there was just this booklet of photographs of different models.  Now
the majority of sets are to make one particular car/spaceship/building with
instructions for that model.

Roy,
I keep a Brickshelf collection of vintage pieces:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=8642

Included in there are galleries for:
Comparisons & part variations (including changes from vintage parts to modern)
Evolution of Printed Flags
Evolution of Painted Trees
Collection of Printed/Named Beams (and other printed vintage parts)

The galleries include alot of pictures generously donated, but I do have
some of the parts pictured. I also have ALOT of research regarding the parts
pictured. I don't know if you just want dis-play pieces, or if you also seek
information. Drop me a note & I'll help you where I can.

I wish I could be at Brickfest. I would love to lead a discussion group
(read bore you silly) about vintage minutia.

Good luck with the presentations,
Clark

PS: Image submissions to my galleries are always welcomed, and will be credited.
