I think it's an unfortunate side effect of the current LEGO trend of providing
names/personalities/etc for their 'cast of characters'. According to the
latest Mania magazine, the fellow there (whose name escapes me) is the Rock
Raider who specializes in driving the land craft - so of course he's in all the
land craft in the line.
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing more of a return to the 'generic' characters
of the past. Who cared if you had a zillion red, yellow, or white astronauts?
Or a bunch of identical Castle soldiers? On the other hand, having *some*
unique characters is kind of cool - I'm glad Majisto was made, for instance.
Actually, thinking about it...
Adventurers and Rock Raiders have clear 'casts of characters'. (Star Wars does
too, but that's excusable. And even there, there are 'generics' like the Scout
Troopers and the Battle Droids.)
Ninja and Fright Knights both have a mix of 'feature characters' and generic
characters. As you go farther back in the Castle sets, the 'genericity'
increases.
I don't really follow Town, but it seems like there's at least one Feature
Character (Jailbreak Joe) and a bunch of generics.
Pirates seemed to be pretty much the same way - you had Captain Redbeard, but
nobody else seemed to have a name, and certainly none of them had anything
defined about them.
I think the way Pirates and some of the earlier Castle did it is the best way
overall. Maybe one or two 'special' characters (Capt. Redbeard & the pirate
wench, the Black Knight & Majisto the wizard) and the rest as undefined and
generic as possible. And don't say much even about the feature characters -
that way you won't have an idea of what they are 'supposed' to be, and can make
up your own people to go with the figs...
