NCLTC just finished a very successful show at the South Hills Mall in Cary,
North Carolina. The display was set up for over a month, and ran unmanned,
continously the whole time. One Saturday afternoon we set up a kids' table,
but that was the extent of the formal supervision.
We were very fortunate to have a lot of support from the mall management and
from one of the tenants, Tom's Trains. We met with both before attempting
the show to discuss security issues. The mall management compensated us for
plexiglass sides added to the layout, worn-out parts, and provided a 3'
plastic picket fence surrounding the layout, about 18 inches from the
tables. Tom of Tom's Trains monitored the layout often, adding 'Do Not Touch
or Reach Over' signs to our plexiglass, and taping down the picket fence to
the floor. Tom also had a store security camera pointed at the layout so
that it could be monitored.
Mike Walsh lives nearby, and frequently fine-tuned the exhibit, adding
details, changing the timers that started and stopped the trains, keeping
the catalog trays stocked. Mike's father-in-law Rex also stopped in
frequently, painting the table legs, adding brackets to the plexiglass,
keeping an eye on things. Their dedication made the show a success.
We did not cover the layout at night, remove rolling stock, etc. We trusted
the public, and that worked out. The only distruction or loss at the layout
was of our own doing. Things got knocked over, lights and train motors
burned out, but nothing was stolen or damaged by visitors.
Part of the show's success was undoubtably due to the nature of the mall,
which was probably built in the late 60's or early 70's. No teenagers hang
around there, and my experience was that the mall-goers are more laid-back
and friendly than at more trendy malls. Anyone at the mall was there to see
the display, or shop at Tom's, or one of the other slightly-offbeat stores.
I seldom saw unsupervised kids, just lots of smiling faces. But I wouldn't
have wanted to attempt the show at a upscale mall.

| (...) Our mall display was also at a similar mall (though it does get a bit more teen traffic than South Hills). Of course we were also inside a lockable store... One thing that became quickly apparent was that security is pretty friendly to people (...) (22 years ago, 13-Jan-03, to lugnet.trains.org)

| Hi! Its been a long time since I've posted here but thought I'd bring up a question for all the train clubs. NILTC has recently been discussing the issues surrounding security at mall shows (shopping malls). Could those who have actually (...) (22 years ago, 12-Jan-03, to lugnet.trains.org)
