How can I decide if one set is valuable to buy in ebay?

Sorry to ask this foolish problem as I am new both in train and eBay.
I found many sets or parts in eBay, some of them are MISB or NIB, some
of them are used or missing some parts, I wan to ask expert of train and
eBay, how can I decide if I need to buy it when I found a set? I like
them but I still not crazy so that I have to consider price and value,
then if I can buy them from S@H directly, do you have a clear answer?
Can you give a sets or parts order of your favorite?
