In most cases, passenger cars will be serviced (cleaned etc. just like
aircraft). This is usually not done on the station tracks. What will happen
with a stub ended station is that the road engine(s) will be uncoupled just
outside the station. It is likely that a switcher will then push the train
into the station (but probably without the mailcar, even the bagage car could
be spotted on a different track, in some cases, the train may be spotted on
more than one track). After all passengers have disembarked, and baggage
unloaded, the cars will be moved to separate maintenance tracks. If the
railroad is operating asymetrical cars such as the rounded end cars, or
combination cars, they will probably have a turntable in the service yard, or
they will turn those cars on the turntable used for engines. In general,
modern trains will avoid having asymetrical cars.

Rounded ends are most easily done with SNOT (Studs Not On Top) construction. A
much larger variety of curved top pieces exist than quarter or half circular
pieces.

| Hello, I am currently building a train layout in my basement and some questions came up that I'm wondering if anybody knows the answers. The first question is about cabooses. I know that they usually carried a red light on the back to show the end (...) (24 years ago, 20-Aug-00, to lugnet.trains)
