The really old ie blue track 4.5V used the old battery box, with the lever on
top, rather than on the lower side. Train sets number 116, 120 and 127 (is the
same as 116) use the
battery box I believe you are refering to. The design for the coal
car/battery box wasn't very inspired, usually some low slopes on the top
surface of the battery box. You could look these up at
www.brickshelf.com/scans/0000/0116/ or substitute 0120 for the last four
digits. There was an accessory set
number 156, which modified the power intake to the motor, allowing us to stop
it when it crossed an elevated switch in the middle of the track.
The 4.5V on the grey track used the battery box with the switch on the side.
(sets 7720, 7722)
I hope this answers your question.

| I wonder if anyone could help me. Did they all have the dedicated cab with three holes for the batteries or did any use the 4.5v battery box with the lever switch ? I have motorised a 7715 with a 4.5 volt motor and wonder if there is a design for (...) (25 years ago, 16-Mar-00, to lugnet.trains)
