Look at <http://www.brickshelf.com/scans/0000/0396/0396-09.html>, step 17.

Instead of simply using a 2x2 brick to mount the chimney, the designers went
to a lot of trouble to insert a 1x2 tile there. Why? To make the chimney break
off easily?

Cheers,
Hao-yang Wang

(...) It sure looks that way! That's very amusing. I'd like to know the answer, too. /Eric McC/ (25 years ago, 15-Mar-00, to lugnet.trains)

(...) There is a 2x3 plate that fits on top of the 1x2 plate in the next step. The studs from the 1x2 fit into the 'holes' of the 2x3, so the 1x2 tile is needed, otherwise the smokestack wouldn't fit on it at all. JohnG, GMLTC (25 years ago, 15-Mar-00, to lugnet.trains)
