I appologise for the way I handled the 9v trains idea book idea, and not

thinking of the poor sods using macs etc. I was in a hurry and said some
stuff
the wrong way.
Here is what I am going to say about the book. Everything else I said
before is
now null and void. Most of the same stuff is said here but it is said
differently

1.this is going to be an idea book patterned after the 7777 TLG idea
book and
will be in a printable book format with a downloadable part with nqc
programs,
dat files etc in it

2.if it had a model # then I would assign 4500 to it

3.it will contain photographs of models, layouts, setups and the like

4.it will also contain cad instructions (with instructions done as
photographs
converted to cad instructions). Instructions done in other forms (e.g.
pov-ray)
may also be converted. Cad instructions means instructions generated
using
ldraw, mlcad, ldao, blockcad, leocad or a similar cad program. (mac
users,
cant you get leocad for the mac? linux users have options open to them
as well)
None of the instructions are going to be of really massive models
because they
would require too many bricks.

5.It will also contain layout designs created in track designer,
paintbrush or
whatever

6.It will not contain images created with povray,3d studio, lightwave or
another
similar rendering program

7.it will not depict modified lego, clone brands or anything that is not
lego,
except for things shown in the photo that are not part of the model and
items
like batteries

8.if mindstorms, scout, microscout or other controll mechanisims are
used then
the programming information will be included.

9.all items shown will have some releation to trains (so no airports or
police
stations need apply)

10.all items will be appropriatly scaled to the 9v train elements, so no
massive
a16 wide 4-8-8-4 steamers either

11.instructions where the author wants to use a part that is not
available
in their cad program of choice will be decided on a case by case basis,
depending on the part and the usage. The part will be stubstituted with
another
part, a mock-up will be used or the part will be omitted. If the part
cant
be substituted, mock-ed up or omitted without ruining the model then the
model
will not appear in the book untill a solution is found.

12.all models will carry the name of the author (unless you don't want
that
there), with the name of the club or whatever if it is a club model.

13.because this is an idea book and not just a collection of MOC's the
elements
used need to be elements that have been used recently (say since 9v
trains came
in). The reasons for this are:
A.all TLG idea books follow this
B.the models should be buildable without needing to spend a fortune to
get the
parts. Even a metroliner can still be found without breaking the bank.
C.the name idea book should give you a clue. an idea book is a book of
building
ideas using elements that are currently available or recently available.

I think that most of these rules are not overly unfair to any one group
here
on lugnet. I have covered all the different computer types in common
use,
left the door open as to the width of the models (hint, hint larry) and
covered
what to do if the part you want is not there.

The only thing I need is someone to handle the uploading to either their

webspace or to a free homepage account (with xoom or whatever) as I am
unable
to upload files because the proxy software running on the proxy server
doesn't
have the functionality to do it. I have to go through the proxy
(something to
do with keeping hackers out of the university network, I guess)so I am
stuck.
I will handle all the necessary graphics for the page and also for the
book.
I will also do the html needed for this project. Oh, and I guess I will
need
some content for this idea book.

We need to come up with a name for this book. How about the big book of
train
ideas? Or mabie just 9v train idea book?

one final thing, no TLG designs, photos or whatever will appear in this
book.

(...) Who, me? I think you mean John Neal. I'm pretty much a conventional 6 wide kind of guy. Some of my models have slight protrusions beyond 6, but none are based on 8 wide floors like John Neal's are... (I think you'd agree that even though (...) (25 years ago, 4-Feb-00, to lugnet.trains)
