Built them as in the plans and admired them, rolled them around my layout, crash them, put them back together.

This year I used design ideas and parts from the Hobby Train sets to rebuild my Hogwarts (http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=30095). And it all started from the Coach model #10 in the HB set. The style and importantly the design of the doors created a very different profile. The extra height and size of the regular LTrain door gives many models a tall stubby look.

The coaches look around 4-6 studs longer than the original (but they of course are not). So I went back to the credits for the Hobby Design and what do I find. The designer that showed off a new door design, one which has had me totaly rebuild two of my favourite trains is.......James Mathis.

So I guess it wasn’t so unthinkable to put a newer James M designed door into his SF design. Thanks so much James for all your designs, you are an inspiration.

Peter and all,

You have done the thinkable, the imaginable.... You have created something that is your own. Very clever.

Credit for the door design? Unlikely was me. I can’t dare to accept that credit. That design style has been around for a long time. I’m sure someone else showcased it first over a decade ago.

I am always pleased to see the results and transformations derived from any given model as inspiration. That is exactly what I do, too. I derive designs from others’ models, as well. I could probably count on one hand the number of truly unique and original build constructions that I’ve discovered. And, to that, I’ve probably forgotten what they are-- lost into the shared world of creativity we all enjoy with LEGO. It’s all derivative.... And, I certainly don’t want to take any credit.

Please, don’t ever think twice to modify and make your own variant-- for you will likely discover something truly unique and original as you do so, either in The Brick or within Yourself. I’ve seen several remakes of the Super Chief and other streamliners that are simply stunning-- complementing and surpassing the designs that were packed in the set boxes. Even seeing the Super Chief car parts distributed into other train MOCs or even non-train MOCs is awesome. Parts are parts! (Although it is nice to see a “preserved” original 10020, 10022, and 10022 set on a track at a Train Club show ;-)

Great job on the Hogwarts and Super Chief. I’m glad I spotted your post.

Above this all, I would like to say how impressed I am at the level of detail, dedication, and longevity that is shown within the LEGO Community. I continue to be impressed by the models, conventions, and cooperation on display. This is truly inspirational.
