Hello all a real newbie question for you, I am trying to build some of my own rolling stock and engines for my train/town set up and have been plagued with the inability to find the train car bases and wheels etc. Is there a special section of the Lego shop web site or is there a better source on bricklink? Also does anyone post directions for basic building design or sell directions?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Michael.

Hi Michael,

Jason’s suggestions are excellent ones. I think I’ve heard that the new Factory train box will debut on March 19 for $100, so you haven’t much longer to wait.

Interestingly, when the train wagon bottom kit was available in the US, it was $15, and a complete passenger car, still available, is $20: http://shop.lego.com/ByTheme/Product.aspx?p=10015&cn=377&d=328

You get all the parts of the train base plus various doors, windows, and roofs. It’s a good set to buy for the extra parts.

As for instructions, the Factory train box will have plenty of those, though as I understand it, you may have to view them using a computer.

You can visit the website of Mike Walsh as well: http://www.carolinatrainbuilders.com/

He sells some instructions as well as custom models. There are a few instruction sets available for free.

There’s also Jake McKee’s book, Getting Started with LEGO Trains. It has some directions for a reefer car, intermodal car, and a diesel freight locomotive and talks about some basics of trains. More of a read for beginners though. http://www.amazon.com/Getting-Started-Trains-Jacob-McKee/dp/1593270062

LGauge.com has some instructions available: http://www.lgauge.com/trains/renderings/instructions.htm

Lastly, there are many links not listed here that are included on ILTCO’s links page: http://iltco.org/links/

Good luck! Jordan
