Hello all a real newbie question for you, I am trying to build some of my own
rolling stock and engines for my train/town set up and have been plagued with
the inability to find the train car bases and wheels etc.
Is there a special section of the Lego shop web site or is there a better
source on bricklink?
Also does anyone post directions for basic building design or sell directions?
Any help would be appreciated

Hi Michael.
LEGO did sell a train accessory pack 3737 - Train Wagon Bottom:
Depending on territory, you may still be able to buy it from
LEGO Shop-At-Home.
On the other hand, you may like to wait for the new 10183 Hobby Train Set to
become available:
Bricklink is better if its specific parts youre after, or if youd rather buy
used parts to keep your costs down.
Something to watch out for is that LEGO has just started a new Infra-Red
Remote-Controlled train system which uses battery-powered trains on plastic
track. Whenever you buy track now, you have to check which youre getting. The
giveaway is that 9V track comes in separate straight and curve packs (although
stocks of these are running down), whereas the plastic IR track comes in a
combined box of straights and curves - and its cheaper. You have to be careful
with buying points though.
The same wheelsets run on both track types, but obviously you need 9V motors
with metal wheels to pick up power from the metal-topped tracks. The motor for
the IR trains is a similar size, but it has axle slots for attaching plastic
wheels.
The other thing to note is that all the latest trains from LEGO (9V or IR) come
with dis-assembled wheel blocks. You have to fit the wheels and axles into the
wheel block yourself, whereas they used to come pre-assembled. This may affect
how they are listed on Brickshelf.
Finally, one good source of new parts is the LEGO
Factory. There you can download LEGOs CAD package for designing your own
sets, or simply go to the Pick a Brick section, select category
Transportation and bulk order whatever you need. Remember youll need a wheel
bearing element, an axle, and two train wheels for each wheel block.
So far, everyone who has bought from this has said that the track and motors
listed on the Factory site are all the 9V metal rail type.
