That was exactly what I thought 'til I built one for our LUCNY layout. Turns out
the diodes have to be the same way round :) So you only have to make one
polarity of diode insulated track section.

I use an RCX to simply reverse power every minute or so. The train runs back and
forth between terminus stations quite nicely. By placing the diodes at the
correct distance from the stations, the train coasts nicely to a halt at each
end. (In fact, I have dual lines, both controlled by the RCX, one with a 60
second cycle and one with a 65 second cycle. MAkes for some nice coming and
goings.)

There are no sensors to set up and it is basically fool proof 'cos with the
diodes in there, the trains cannot crash off the end of the line even if the RCX
goes tilt.
