It is by no means dumb.

Anthony -
What you described has been mentioned several times. Cary Clark reported on
the experience he and I had with the Santa Fe shortly after it came out
here: http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=17905 There are several follow on
posts which discuss wheel problems and weight.
Cary and I concluded that the weight of the Santa Fe and the proximity of
curves had the most effect on slowing down the Santa Fe. Looking at your
layout, you make 90 degree turns pretty close together so I am not surprised
you ran into this. When I run the Santa Fe I always run it with two
locomotives, each with one powered truck. Even with that set up it can run
into problems. It is a heavy train, no doubt about it. If your track
layout is uneven, you will probably find where the studs facing down toward
the track underneath the carriages and locomotive will rub on the track.
These plates should have been tiles to ensure no rubbing.
