Personally, I think the concept of approach lighting (which can work
with any indication set) is pretty cool. Basically, in this scheme, to
save wear and electricity, signals are "dark" or not lit up, except when
a train is within a block or two... if a signal is dark, it's like a
red, you cannot pass it but must stop and radio for clearance.
