Mind the Gap!
This is my D78ss train. It is the second of my three LU creations and the
second one to be functionally complete (the first still isn’t).
The D78 stock (or just ‘D stock’) runs solely on the District line and numbers
75 6-car trains. It is subsurface rather than tube stock; this means that it in
larger tunnels closer to the surface and on open-air routes. The ‘D’ means it
was subsurface stock (and coincidentally intended for the District line) which
is lettered alpabetically by class and ‘78’ represents the planned in-service
year. the Ds entered service in 1980 replacing O, P and R stock on the line. D
stock is currently undergoing a very long drawn-out refurbishment programme.
The D stock is arranged into DM-T-UNDM or DM-T-DM (Driving Motor car - Trailer
Car - Uncoupling Non Driving Motor car) 3-car units. Two of these units are
arranged back to back into one train. When the A stock on the East London line
was withdrawn for refurbishment in the mid ‘80s D stock DM-T-DM units were used
on that line as single unit trains. My D stock train is in the latter
configuration. Just like the actual units my one is semi-permanently coupled
with magnetic couplings at the cab ends only.
This train was much easier to build compared to my 95ts and battery locomotive
as they were built to the tube standard whereas subsurface stock is closer to
mainline rail dimensions. Thus I was able to use ordinary wheelsets and not have
to cut the motor into the body.
I have modified this train somewhat; when first built it was a two car train. I
built windows in the car ends which actually only appear on the single D stock
train that has had the full refit (identifiable by being in the corporate
colours; red, white and blue) my train is not that one so I had to remove them.
When I came to built a trailer car to go in the middle I also changed from using
trans-clear bricks on the side windows to trans-clear 1x2x2 panels. The last
work I undertook was to fit a floor inside and add some seats and passengers.
