Doug,

You are right!  I couldn't find 65537 listed at BrickBros either.  But it
should also be pointed out that this is a hard set to try and locate
anywhere on the internet.  I did some searching for it on google, and most
e-tailers selling LEGO don't have it in stock if they have the stock number
in their inventory.   So it must have been snatched up by a lot of AFOLs
already.  One such online shop Bills Bricks
http://store.billsbricks.com/b65leclfrtr.html has changed the item's
description to include the word "Backordered" in it.

However, there are some listed in a couple of BrickLink stores, so you might
want to hurry on over and pick-up one or more while they are still
available.  Hopefully this link will take you right to where the shops with
inventory of this item are listed:
www.bricklink.com/search.asp?invXrefID=54757&invType=F

Good luck on your search.

Ray

I don't seem to see this train on the Brick Brothers site anywhere. I too • would like to take the jump to trains, and would like to try with this one

At present I believe that all the sets have old dark grey track excepting
the newer <http://guide.lugnet.com/set/10132 10132 motorized Harry Potter
set> and possibly the <http://guide.lugnet.com/set/65537 65537 My Own Train
Classic Freight Train> may also have new dark grey as it was released this
year. (can anyone confirm?)

New track packs bought from Lego may contain new dark grey, I suppose it
depend how long they have been in the warehouse. I suspect the older sets
may move to New Dark Grey if further production runs are produced.

One thing to look out for is that the <http://guide.lugnet.com/set/4511 4511
High speed train> used old greys but the add-ons for it
(<http://guide.lugnet.com/set/10157 10157 High Speed Train Locomotive> and
<http://guide.lugnet.com/set/10158 10158 High Speed Train Car>) use new
greys.

Oh, ya!!! I completely forgot about that one! It IS a screaming deal.

I think a lot of adult fans at the time didn't think much of the set
design.  It has good parts and thus if you can find it deeply discounted
it's a good buy, but the design, as written, is kinda blah. It's not
realistic (even in a LEGO way... 4512 looks more like a modern European
intercity train than 4561 does) and it's not very futuristically cool
either. (compare with the 4559 which is gaining respect over time, I think,
for some of the cool aspects to the design, and which is probably more
futuristic looking.) Also it has a POOP base for the (single truck) engine
where 4559 at least gave you some  more useful parts.

That's all my opinion only, mind you.

That is a screaming deal. Thanks. I'm curious as to why 4561 isn't highly
regarded. I guess I'm more looking for a basic set up (motor, tracks and
some basic parts) and then intend on creating my own train. I agree that the
more recent Super Chief is great looking but I tend to keep sets together
for such a short period of time that it ends up rarely being worth the cost.

And the next question I have: do all the new sets (like this 65537) have
track in the new dark gray or the old? I probably don't even want to touch
this color issue, do I?

The easy no brainer is the 65537 My Own Train Classic Freight Train, which
has upwards of $165 worth of stuff and sells for under $80 (try
<www.brickbros.net>).  See http://news.lugnet.com/trains/?n=23415&t=f&v=a
for more info.

Welcome back!

It is (the most recent technology)

That change happened almost 15 years ago now, and there haven't been any
changes since, so any 9V you get is compatible with any other. 4.5 and 12v
stuff is also gauge compatible. So it's all good.

What are your criteria? Low cost? Complete set with nothing else to buy? • Most attractive models? Best "Play value". The answer depends on your wants.

4561 is not highly thought of by most AFOLs, so you can find used copies
on various sites such as AuctionBrick, eBay or BrickLink quite cheaply. it
is a complete set, and gives you a fair assortment of parts. You will not
find it on Lego.com as it's no longer a current set.  But people bought a
lot of them.

The "most attractive models" would go to the current "deluxe Super Chief"
that LEGO has... 2 engines, 5 cars and all very well liked by many. But
that's going to set you back 3-4x as much when all is said and done as I
think you still need to get track and a regulator (get those in the
aftermarket if you can, LEGO's pricing is a bit stiffer than if you shop
around)

Best "Play Value" probably goes to the current cargo train set 4512. Or • one of the My Own Train freight sets.

The above are just one set of opinions. This is a common question so do • some searching backwards in the archives of this group and you'll find more.

I've recently come out of my dark ages and feel its about time to finally
get a train set up going after years of dreaming of one.  I've done some
research on which trains to get or start with and haven't come to any
conclusive "this is the set to start with".  I like the look of the 4561 set
"Railway Express w/120v AC transformer" but I'm actually not entirely clear
if that's the most recent technology -

I know there has been some changes in the past with the 12v and the 4.5v • and that the current trains run on 9v.

Would this set be a good set to start with?  Can anyone think of a • better one to start with?

Thanks!

(...) I heard a rumor at a train show that TLC had a manufacturing problem and won't have more than a few thousand available to retailers until after Christmas. (20 years ago, 2-Dec-04, to lugnet.trains)
