Hello Teunis,
The tube trains are 6-wide. They are running alongside standard trains which are
also 6-wide so visually it was important to ensure that, if anything, they look
a little narrower in keeping with the character of the prototype. There are no
projections beyond 6 studs (like handrails etc.) but instead there are
indentations to provide relief.
Here is another pic showing a typical London Underground station with two tube
trains waiting at the ready. I've cheated of course, by using two ends of the
same unit.
