Just another thought or two...
I tried running a non-DCC locomotive (i.e. one with a regular train motor :-) by
hooking the RC receivers output directly to the track. You get 3 speeds
forward and reverse: real slow, medium, and full speed. No doubt the batteries
would probably wear out pretty quick, especially with a long train, but it
really is neat that Lego is so modular that things like this are possible.
Another idea would be to use the forward/reverse lever on the RC remote to
control a Technic minimotor that turns the dial on a train speed controller
using some clever gearing (I seem to remember someone using an RCX to do just
that very thing). Also, since the RC receiver has a built in motor to control
steering, this could be used to throw a polarity switch which in turn powers a
motorized turnout. Lots of possibilities!
Ok, enough rambling from me... :-)
Cheers,
Mark

| (...) I believe a full sized motor was used, and I believe it was MichLTC's own Steve Ringe at the meeting before last. There may have been others though. (21 years ago, 13-Apr-04, to lugnet.trains, FTX)

| Having recently acquired the 8376 Hot Flame RC Car... [LEGOSet 8376] ...it didn't take too long before I got to thinking about how this bit of gadgetry might be useful in the train environment. :-) So, here's the idea: (URL) Yep, that's a micromotor (...)
