The "make your own suggestion" actually gives you more flexibility than
flex track. You actually build the track in place, much the same way as
is done in real life (traditionally, in real life these days they're
actually starting to use pre-fab "sectional" track in some places). In
model railroading, this is called "handlayed track".

In most cases, people who handlay track, handlay their entire setup
(though sometimes flex track is used in tunnels and other hidden track).
It wouldn't be too difficult to make transition pieces, but why bother?
