In addition to various 4.5v sets as mentioned by other responses, you could
also buy them individually at some toy stores in Europe in the late 70's.

| Using the responses, I've been able to check out the sets on Brickshelf; I'm not surprised I missed them first time round! Judging by the lack of other train related pieces in the box, I guess they are likely to have been sold as the single items (...) (23 years ago, 21-Feb-02, to lugnet.trains)
