Yes, can be done that way, but you need one extra 7865 motor for that.

My method is not 100% satisfieing, but I have done conversions for a 9V motor
to run it on 12V track.

Felsir has used a (formerly damaged) hollow motor to pick up 9V and transfer it
to a 12V motor. For sure that would work the other way round too. You could
simply use the set 1151 sliding contacts from the 70ies for that purpose.
