Hi All,
I posted some pictures of my two latest WWII MOCs ... a flatbed train
car with an 88mm anti-aircraft gun mounted on it, and a Lockheed P38
Lightning airplane.
The P38 can be seen at:
http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=4576
It was one of the fastest Allied planes during the war, thanks to its
unique design and twin powerful engines. It's nose housed an impressive
armament of four guns: three 7.62 mm guns and a 20mm cannon. Two of the
three top American aces in WWII flew P38s. Its distinctive shape
inspired German forces to refer to it as the "Fork-Tailed Devil". The
model has a retractable landing gear.
The flatbed car is the latest addition to my German train ... only four
more cars to go and it's done! It can be seen here:

The gun has a 360 degree traverse, and can elevate to about 85 degrees.
Although it was originally intended as an anti-aircraft gun (and that's
its use on this train), it found successful service as an anti-tank gun
throughout the war. Typically, when used in anti-tank applications, the
front shields were emplaced, as shown in some of the photographs. The
guns were mounted on halftracks, trucks, train cars, and permanent
emplacements throughout the war.

| (...) Very cool, Shaun! I've wanted to take a shot at making a P-38, myself, but I've too many other things lined up at present - including a rebuild of my Corsair. (I was pretty happy with it till I came across your MOC's and now I want to try and (...) (24 years ago, 23-May-01, to lugnet.build)

| The models are both very nicely done! I like the use of tranparent bricks and slopes on the cockpit of the P38. It gives the impression of a multi-faceted front, just like the real cockpit. That's a great way to build a cockpit. The use of patterned (...) (24 years ago, 23-May-01, to lugnet.build)

| WOW! You definitely are too good at making WWII models. I love the amount of detail and level of accuracy you put into your models. Great job on both of the models. However, I must say I favour the 88 mm Flak Gun the most! ;-) (...) (24 years ago, 23-May-01, to lugnet.build)

| (...) Dude, I've already told you this in email, but what the hey: They're awesome. I could tell it was a P-38 Lightning without looking at any captions. I eagerly await your P-51 Mustang and B-17 Flying Fortress. Mark W. (24 years ago, 23-May-01, to lugnet.build)
