I never knew what those things were supposed to be-- thanks, Lar.  I thought he was
referring to the buffers...

This is an ill formed question. What exactly is it you are asking for?

Perusing the instructions, on step 2 of the locomotive instructions
(page 2:
http://www.kl.net/scans/7000/7722/7722-02.jpg ) there are two pieces
added that meet your vague criteria of being a "1x2 plate in red with
something attached".

These pieces are the simulated cylinders for the locomotive. This
particular model does not have piston rods or connecting rods, but I
believe in other models of the era, there are sliders that engage in
some of the internal grooves of this piece to enable more detailed
simulation of steam locomotive mechanicals.

I don't know if they have an official name, and I don't know the TLG
part number for the piece, either.

Please do us all a favor and:
- do your homework before you ask questions.
- ask well formed, specific questions, that admit of a specific answer.
- remember the admonition in my signature. This is a family forum. WTF
is not an appropriate abbreviation, nor is it one that is necessary for
emphasis in this context.

I am not easily offended by profanity so it doesn't bother me as much as
it does others. But I have a low tolerance for cluelessness, especially
when coupled with laziness, and I suspect the sentiment is shared by a
number of others.
