I just got trains for the first time this December and this coupled with talking to Jim Rosikiewicz about gearing problems for his turntable at the last GardenSLUG meeting has had me thinking about how to do (...) (...) <snippage> (...) (taking a shot into the dark) Might it have something to do with simplifying the mold process for that part. By elminating those 'thru the rail' slots, they now have/had a more simple molding operation. Same might be true of (...) (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.trains)
