Hi all,

After LEGO 'published' the Blacksmith set by Dan as the first in their MOC
series, none have followed. Do you know why they only published one MOC in
their series?
Also, was it 2001 when they published this set?
And was the price 39,99$?

Thanks a million,

The carriages for the Santa Fe train were also an AFOL design, in this case

Though they didn't list it as a 'My-Own-Creation'.

The Blacksmith Shop was just one of several sets Dan put together himself and
sold through his website, so it was perfect for LEGO to take on:

Most other fan creations aren't so suitable for production as kits, or at least
LEGO can't tell how sturdy or efficient they are just from photos.  LEGO have
actually taken to hiring fans recently, rather than just looking for candidates
with design qualifications.  They then go on to use fan-developed techniques or
look to the needs of fans in designing new LEGO sets.  The Café Corner is an
obvious example:

As is the upcoming Creator house set.

The other way they've worked is to involve fans in the production of new
versatile sets, such as the Hobby Train Set:

I guess that the pool of suitable fan models was pretty small, so after that as
a test run, they adopted these other methods of getting fan input to designs.
