How to hide the wires?

My son and I made our first lighted model today -- we have an open-back model of
a split-level home, and the basement was rather dark and dreary, so we added two
standard 9V light bricks on the supporting columns at the back, facing into the
room.

The illumination looks great, but now we have ugly wires -- in particular, the
short wire we ran from one column to the other isn't really short enough, and it
sticks out into the room, threatening to clothesline any poor minifigs that run
through too quickly.

How do people generally handle this sort of thing?  I've seen pictures posted
here of other lit models, and I never see any wires sticking out... but it seems
overkill to make a whole new interstitial space, just to run one lighting
wire...

Thanks for any tips,
- Joe
