Aha!
I had an epiphany. When I posted this hack:

the question was raised if it could be done so the door opens up.
The height is identical to the original. 3 bricks high. The first picture is a
little fuzzy but the second has the guts of it any way.
The whole assembly sits on a 2x2 tile. Here is the place to use the 2x2 tile
WITHOUT groove. It has a more finished look. The container is topped off with
two 1x4 tile (no groove again) with the pins in the bottom of the tile inserted
into the holes in the studs on top of the container (can't use the variety with
solid studs). This gives the half stud off set. The bottom of the container is
made flush with two jumper plates (modified 1x2 tile with one stud). A plate
lies across the top and sandwiches it down.

The container sits on the 2x2 tile and is held down with 2 headlight bricks on
top of a 1x2 plate. The base headlight brick connects to the bottom of the next
with its "headlight stud" facing down. The end result is an "L". The downward
facing headlight stud connects to the upside down 1x4 tile.

The headlight bricks hold the assembly in and the surrounding bricks hold the
assembly tight. The assembly is 4 bricks deep so two will fit back to back in
an eight wide train, which is where I plan to use it. I sense a re-build coming
on.
