I've done some technic scale stuff:

buy the bulk buckets at discount & use the bulk ordering at Lego.com
to get the detail, try some small study models; try a lamppost, or window, or
cornice of a building.  At large scale, 1x1 & 1x2 bricks can give plenty of
detail.
