Suppose ProtoDermis effected more than just the Toa.
During the Toa's heroic battle with Cahdok and Gahdok, superheated
protodermis rose to Mata Nui's surface via fissure vents. Some Matoran near
these vents came in contact with the liquid protodermis, and it fused to
their masks. Hence Trans-Metallic Matoran.
