My latest MOC - an 8 wheel drive atv.

This started out with four wheels - and the ability to steer.
Then it bacame six-wheeled - the front wheels connected via
a differential so that they didn't turn.. it could still turn
with the front wheels dragging around...

But when the vihicle climbed really steep, it needed something
to push the back.. the rcx had the weight and two more wheels
were added. Now it can climb anything  - it even climbs up to
20 cm vertical.but the ability to steer is long gone  :(

if individual steering has to be added - it will be too big
and flimsy - I thought of a third motor og the "hood" to lift
the back end up - but how can that be done while keeping the
back end "loose"? The overall goal was to make a small atv
with superb climbing ability - It can't be too big!

any suggestions?

Could you incorporate some sort of articulation? You could completely
redesign the frame with a rotation joint in the middle.

Or perhaps design your front and rear axles with articulation. I don't know
if that would steer very well, but it's just a thought.

Or, getting back to your lifting idea, perhaps you could make the front and
rear axles lift off the ground, and then skid-steer the middle two axles.
That would require the use of extra motors, and you'd have to redesign your
gear train.
