The rotor design for the 8856 and 8444 would not allow the helecoptor to
move forwards backwards or sideways.  If you tilt the rotor (as is done in
these sets) the only thing that happens is that the fusalage of the
helecoptor tilts. In a real helecoptor the blades's pitch varies as it
rotates around the hub.  The stick controls the pitch of the rotor.

It has already been made by Lego in 1977, 852 Reconnoitre Helicopter.
Wonder why they did not do that later on also?

Yep, but 852 only has collective control, and relies on gravity! Ben's has
limited cyclic control (nose up/down), and no collective, but that's just a
limitation imposed by the original 8444 model - full collective and cyclic
could be done with Ben's mechanism, although collective control would
require the "ball gear" to slide up & down the rotor shaft.

Note that the mechanism used in 852 can be used (with some mods) on the tail
rotor, as it doesnt need cyclic control. You can see an example of this in
my own helicopter model http://www.lugnet.com/~469/projects/helicopter
