I'm building an orrery and came up with this gear train for the earth and
moon. The ratio is 1:27.7777 which is as close as I could come to the actual
orbit of the moon, which is 27.32268 days. That's about 1.6% difference, or
about 11 hours over the course of a month. I would be interested in your
comments, and especially if anyone can approach the ratio more accurately.

This link is to a .dat file showing just the gear train. The axle extending
through the differential housing at top drives the earth, and the 1x8 plate
driven by the diff. housing represents the moon.

Hi Don, If your gear train does not require too much torque, you could try using two rubber wheels as bevel gears. By having one tire ride on the face of the other wheel, you can get any fractional ratio you want. I've once seen a car in a museum (...) (23 years ago, 4-Apr-02, to lugnet.technic)
