Hi Chris,
On my tower crane (http://www.lugnet.com/~469/projects/towercrane), I used 2
pulleys on a shaft for the hook winder. You can hold as much as you want by
choosing the distance between the pulleys.
I thought about making a winder, but nothing I came up with was small enough to
fit in the design. The best I came up with was 2 parallel worm screws turning
in opposite directions, string running between them, with an arm holding the
string against each one alternately.
