Oops! I thought you wanted to prevent the worm gear from sliding completely.
You know, since the length of the worm gear is slightly shorter than two
studs, it will slide a little and you have to leave a gap between the two
bushes to lock it down completely... Sorry, wrong answer.
Perhaps instead of sliding the worm gear along the axle, you could fix the
worm gear to the axle, but slide the axle (together with the worm gear)
against the rest of your machine? It is a lot easier to attach rubber bands
or shock absorbers to an axle than a worm gear.
