resistance on axle with a worm gear?

I'm stuck. Any ideas for adding resistance, longitudinally, along an axle
that spins a worm gear? I tried a shock spring, but that's kinda mixed.....

(...) Hi i used a spring off the large lego pump incombination with a small gear. Worm gear on one side of the spring and the gear on the other end this method provides no extra friction (24 years ago, 25-Jan-01, to lugnet.technic)
