I'm not crazy about the Star Wars LEGO - at least not
the Episode 1 stuff. Most of that feeling has to do with
the fact that I was disappointed in George Lucas's vision
that he had 20 years to develop. I thought the movie stunk.
Anyways, I was out picking up some LEGO for gifts and I
took a second look at the 8001 Battle Droid. 328 pieces for
about $40.00 CDN was not a great deal, and it had no parts
that I needed, but the idea of a model that unfolded and was
dynamic sure intrigued me.
As I built the droid, I began to appreciate the skill with
which it was designed. The kit is packaged in three bags,
legs, torso, and backpack/arms.
Each section fits on the other using friction pins. The
rubber bands are used in a mechanical linkage that works
like a vise-grip or toggle clamp. The name escapes me
for some reason.
Once the droid was assembled, I demostrated it to my kids.
Needless to say they were impressed. Even my wife was impressed.
The head snaps up, the legs swing around and extend, and the
best part is how it pulls the blaster out of its backpack.
I have not built the walker model yet, the droid stands guard
over my desk right now.
This is a very cool model, even if you don't like Star Wars
merchandise at all.
Cheers,

| Ralph Hempel says... (...) If you haven't yet tried it, get the 8002 Destroyer Droid as well. 8001 is good, but 8002 is simply amazing. The mechanism by which everything unfolds is intricate to a degree not equaled in any other TLG set, except maybe (...) (25 years ago, 4-May-00, to lugnet.build, lugnet.technic)
