Last night I had a new-style 9V motor attached directly to a 40-tooth gear that
was turning an 8-tooth gear. There was a fair amount of torque involved, and my
motor stalled after a while. Now the thing won't turn unless I really force it.
What should I do? Should I call LEGO and have them send me a new one? Should I
take it apart and try to fix it? What happened to it, anyway?

The motor in question is from a Mindstorms 2.0 kit, and the number on the bottom
is 43362.

The folks at LEGO are VERY good about replacing messed up motors.  I've done it all
on-line, before.

Are they? I submitted a request for three replacement motors online about two
months ago. 2 seized right out of the box (set 3038) and one has almost stopped
working. (Since then I have had another one die on mee too)

The following day I recieved a response from them that I should call customer
service, upon doing so, I was told that I would probably be required to pay some
money, which I have no problem with (I assumed they ment shipping costs). After
a few minutes of being on hold I was told that they would ship me the motors at
full price ($30 CAD/motor). I decided to forgo that, and still have the 3 motors
(and one additional motor since) sitting around collecting dust...

Perhaps I should try again...
