The closest thing to your requirements Joe would be Racers set 8475/8366:

Designed for technic use, modular, and uses radio control
(not IR). The receiver unit houses 6xAA batteries, has
a +/- 45 degree front output servo (internal) with
a Technic axle hole.

At the back of the receiver are two 2x2 connectors for
standard LEGO cables. The red one is for the main motors,
and has PWM control - there are 7 positions for the
transmitter joystick: OFF, 33% duty cycle forward/backwards,
66% forward/backwards, and 100% forward/backwards.
The gray 2x2 connector is the 3rd "auxiliary" channel,
and is controller by 2 paddles on the bottom of the
transmitter - this has only forward/backward control though.

The sets come with 2 powerful 9V motors - I believe
capable of 3Amps draw at stall.  More details can be
found at Philo's webpage:
http://philohome.com/motors/motorcomp.htm
These things EAT normal alkaline batteries - I use
2100 mAh NiMH rechargeable AAs.  You lose a bit of speed
because they are 1.2V vs. 1.5V, but they last!

If you can't find the set, Bricklink sells the parts
individually. Be careful though, because LEGO also made
an 8376 R/C car that used an ALMOST identical receiver
unit, but WITHOUT the very useful gray "auxiliary output".

Hope this helps!

(...) Thanks, this does look very much like what I was hoping to find. Pity that LEGO no longer makes the three-channel version (or so I hear), but perhaps they'll bring it back with sufficient begging and pleading. Meanwhile, I'll see what I can (...) (19 years ago, 31-Jan-05, to lugnet.technic)
