The RC buggy motors will work, but they run about 3 times the speed of the other
motors, so you may want to gear them, anyway.
As for mounting 9v motors, you can put Technic 1x2s on both sides of the top, next
to the electric connection, and put 1x4s on the bottom, and run vertical beams on
either side.

One motor is mounted sideways, with a white liftarm (studless) holding it in place.
I guess the spacing is not as I described.
Another motor pictured, uses the method you described above, along with a couple
more beams, to mount it.
