At last - pictures of my 10-step Pneumatic Pick and Place robot!

More pictures (once moderated) at: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=82738

The robot uses 6 large and 2 small cylinders and 9 switches. The pneumatic circuit consists of a 3-stage flip-flop and an Exclusive-OR gate. There are four functions: grab (with rear switch bank in parallel), wrist (90 deg rotation), extension (by 1 cylinder length) and elbow (90 deg rotation).

The robot collects 2x10 bricks from the chute and moves them to the tan coloured box. All you have to do is supply enough air. That’s a struggle, even with 3 pump cylinders in each hand - your hands soon get tired! I sometimes use a car tyre air compressor set to 25psi - noisy but less effort and twice as much air as 6 hand pumps.

I built the robot in 1996 and it might do with an update, such as using flex tubing as much as possible to reduce the balloon effect and help keep the tubes tidy.

(...) Very nice Mark. Great to see more pneumatic devices being published. I'd love to see a schematic diagram for your circuit. Any chances of that? (...) Yes, we need to work on better LEGO based compressors. I'm starting to look like Popeye with (...) (21 years ago, 13-May-04, to lugnet.technic, FTX)
