then just pick up some air tanks elsewhere, which would be a nice
starting point.

With out a doubt, the 8455 Technic Back-Hoe is the best way to get started.  You
get two large pumps, seven switches, and 10 large pistons, plus hoses and T's.

Any other suggestions as to a good "value for money" way to get a good
starting stock of pneumatics?

I've bought more than a hundred pistons and 100 switches, plus lots of T's and
hoses on www.bricklink.com.  I've also bought small pistons/small pumps/hoses
from PITSCO, LEGO's educational arm.

Marcin, welcome to the fun world of LEGO pneumatics!  I'm really into making
complicated pneumatic circuits.  Feel free to peek at my website
http://www.kclague.net, and my pictures on brickshelf (kclague).

Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Kevin
