I was thinking of a large turntable (or more precisely, a thrust roller
bearing). I'd lay it flat and run wheels (or something circular with a
smooth, hard edge) in the "channel" around the circumference. I'd set
another ring on top to "sandwich" the roller wheels. Of course you'd have to
rigidly connect the bottom ring to the bottom structure of your model and
the same for the super structure and top ring.
I don't know how well this will work, but it's just an immediate thought
that comes to mind after seeing your pics.
