Apologies are not necessary--I agree that the moon mechanism is unsightly
and I am looking for
ways to clean it up for the nine planet version.  Unfortunately (for orrery
makers) the moon's orbit
and earth's axis of rotation are not coaxial.

That said, here is an orrery made by Don Rogerson that uses that a
differential housing for a
coaxial mechanism:

His geartrain is amazingly correct.

With my nine planet version, I'm trying to find the right balance between
clarity and "correctness".
"Correctness" includes such things as elliptical orbits, proper periods,
multiple moons for Jupiter,
Pluto's out-of-plane orbit , etc.  The list is endless and it is just a
matter of drawing the line.
