Sorting through a recent consignment of Lego I bought on Ebay, I found a part I didn't know existed. (URL) think I'll try Peeron first now after Jennifer brought it to my attention) The 'Technic Connector Toggle Joint Smooth' looks just lke a (...) I just built this, and although you non-Technic AFOLs will say it doesn't really look special, the mechanism for changing between 2 & 3 "feet" has restored my faith in the LEGO Technic designers.
