(...) Philo, I downloaded the tools, and entered the base schematic for Quad242. Quad242 depends on some initial conditions where 4 of the 5 flops have a value of 1. Yes it does, but without the 2x4s, your boom will be able to shear - ie the parallelogram created by the beams & 1x4 plates only has friction holding it square, and a long boom built that way may fail.
