Well after testing this a couple of times (and thanks to Klaas Meijaard for
bringing it to my attention) here's what I found to be an excellent way to
get those yellowed white parts to look as new again...
A chloride solution (I used a product called Glorix, which is simply a
chloride solution with some added chemicals) with water. I store the
mixture in a small plastic container. Put the parts in and let them in
there for 4-6 days, stir it a couple of times a day. I had a few dozen
yellowed parts from a 5521 set which came out looking as new. It also takes
care of most other dirt on parts. There are a few downsides :
- Don't try it on colored parts! Blue, yellow and red (only colors I
tested) will fade and give really weird effects. Also haven't tested
transparant parts yet (for scratched transparant parts I normally use
copper polish)
- It smells terrible (I used 50% Glorix, 50% water, quite strong. Glorix
contains about 30% chloride)
- Don't touch the stuff with your hands, but use gloves. Chloride makes the
skin very "soapy"
After the soaking, simply rinse with lots of water and you're done.

| (...) For those Americans (and possibly others) who may not have much knowledge of chemistry, Jan-Albert is talking about bleach (though my bottle of bleach is only a 5% solution, not the 30% Jan-Albert mentions - which probably explains why Cary (...) (24 years ago, 2-Jan-01, to lugnet.storage)
