Not the most elegant storage method, but ...hey, waddya want for nothing...?

Nothing?  It's not nothing!  Those things cost $0.10 *each*.  In Michigan,
anyway.

Oh, man, I forgot about that.  Here, we have to go searching for some place
that will take them.  So I do not feel bad about cutting them up.

I should warn you that this does not ALWAYS work.

I had some where I had Sam's and Coke, and the bottles would fit together,
but others with same brand of pop which ended up being WAY too snug...so try
this at the risk of losing yer dime...

Thanks for the warning.  It's probably worth the $.20 risk.

I'll bet if you do this, and the project doesn't work, the recycling place
won't take them, since they have been cut.

Many grocery stores have got these way-cool machines that you feed your
bottles and cans into.  They read the UPC barcode for all the containers,
and spit out a refund slip that you turn into a cashier to get the money.

There's a reasonably good chance that the machines will accept a bottle
that's had the top removed.  Especially if the top is reinserted...

I took some crushed pop cans into a recycling depot in Connecticut about 15
years ago, and tried to get my .05 each back.  The teenage girl working
there refused, since they could no longer fill them back up with soda.

That's bad.

Many places (doing manual counting) won't take crushed cans, because it
screws up their counting methods.  They don't keep a count of every can,
they just count the boxes they've filled with cans.  Crushed cans take less
space, which means more cans per box, which means their count will be too
low.  Which means they'll lose money.  Which they seem to dislike.
