Along these lines, I found something the other day that works perfect
for me for my MindStorms kit plus Technic parts. It's called a "Lid
Access Power Tool Case" by Rubbermaid. It's about 15"x14"x6". The lid
has 5 rows of various sized compartements (great for the small and large
Technic parts. The bottom is one large box (for the power tool). It's
got room for a couple boxes to keep bulk bricks in AND enough room to
keep a (not TOO big) robot in so I don't have to take it apart to store
it. It's VERY well made and much more solid that (for example) the
Plano boxes talked about elsewhere.
I got mine at Target for around $16. It's not for everyone (not enough
places for complete Lego collections) but it works well for a specific
sub-set (as in a MindStorms construction kit).
