I thought I'd include the entries for the A-wing, B-wing & TIE Advanced in
the Star Wars Encyclopedia. Maybe it'll help sorting out the differences
between the ships. Happy reading, & get the encyclopedia if you don't
already have it, it's absolutely marvellous! :)

A-wing:

"This small, wedge-shaped craft has been the Alliance's main starfighter
since it first saw full-scale deployment at the Battle of Endor. The
lightweight A-wing, codesigned by General Jan Dodonna and Alliance engineer
Walex Blissex to outrun any ship in the Imperial Navy, has especially strong
avionics, including a powerful jamming system that disrupts sensor readings
and lets pilots blind enemy targets prior to attack. Originally designed for
escort duty, the A-wing has proved more suited to hit-and-run missions,
blasting enemy sites and spacecraft with twin wing-mounted pivoting blaster
cannons and concussion missiles. The downside of the A-wing's speed and
agility is its relatively high vulnerability in dogfights; the position of
the cockpit leaves pilots exposed to enemy fire, making the craft's speed
even more important."

B-wing:

"Admiral Ackbar, with the help of skilled Verpine shipbuilders, personally
designed the B-wing spacecraft. It played a major role in the Rebel Alliance
victory at the Battle of Endor. One of the Alliance's most heavily armed
starfighters, the B-wing in effect is one long, flat wing with an unusual
"floating" cockpit at one end and one oof the ship's three ion cannons at
the other. About midway on the wing two airfoils extend out during combat,
giving the ship the appearance of a cross, or with some imagination, the
letter B. Because of its unusual gyrostabilization system, the cockpit
remains steady while the rest of the ship rotates around it, giving the
pilot a stable field of fire. Designed to go head-to-head against much
larger ships and disable them, the B-wing has also been used for heavy
assault strikes against Imperial facilities and as an escort for X-wing and
Y-wing fighters. In addition to the ion cannons, there is a laser cannon
mounted to the cockpit, two proton torpedo launchers, and two small blaster
cannons. An enhanced model, such as the one Ackbar uses personally, has an
expanded command module with room for a gunner. Along with other changes
that have made the ship faster and tougher, this has substantially increased
its combat success rate."

Tie Advanced:

"The prototype ship used by Darth Vader at the Battle of Yavin, many of its
best design features were later incorporated into the TIE interceptor and
the TIE Advanced (TIE/Ad) ship dubbed the TIE Avenger. The TIE Advanced x1
featured an original spaceframe and reinforced durasteel-alloy hull, with an
elongated rear deck and matching bent wings covered with solar panels. The
vessel had a solar ionization reactor and paired twin-ion engines for a more
powerful drive system than the standard TIE/1n. Speed was only slightly
improved due to the added mass of the vessel; a good deal of the extra power
was bled off to the shield generators. While less maneuverable than standard
TIE fighters, it could take a beating. The TIE Advanced x1 had twin
heavy-blaster cannons in a fixed, front-mounted position. In addition to its
shields, it had a modest hyperdrive but no life support system. The Empire
decided not to order the TIE Advanced x1 in large quantities, citing their
excessive cost. Privately, some Imperial Navy strategists admitted that the
Navy was afraid to purchase a fighter with a hyperdrive, fearing that it
would give bureaucrats an excuse to slash orders for new capital starships.
The Empire instead opted for the TIE interceptor, which featured the TIE
Advanced x1's drive system in a more compact ship. Although the TIE
interceptor lacked a hyperdrive and shields, it was blindingly fast,
increadibly maneuverable, and significantly cheaper than the TIE Advanced
x1. By the Battle of Endor, the large increase in TIE interceptor production
meant the end of production for the TIE Advanced x1."

& then just two brief excerpts from the Interceptor entry:

"The TIE interceptor has more powerful drives than the TIE/1n and is almost
as fast as the New Republic's A-wing fighter."

"As Grand Admiral Thrawn began his bid for power, he began arming some TIE
interceptors with shields, knowing that the Empire could no longer consider
these exceptional ships disposable."
