If you're looking to use the books as LEGO construction references, I'd
suggest going for the Cross-Section Books first, and then following
those up with the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels.
The Cross-Section Books show great detail, scale, and coloration. Most
pictures also include a brief history/description of the vehicle and its
relevance as well. These are where to go to really make the model
real! By the way, I picked up my copy from Barnes and Noble online for
$17 (incl S&H).
The Esserntial Guide shows at least two views of each ship - front,
back, side, top, whatever - which are useful for overall shape and form
determination, which is sometimes tricky from the isometric drawings in
the Cross-Sections. There is also a great deal of history and
background to each entry in this book.
The visual dictionaries are fun to read and examine, but I found them of
limited use in LEGO endeavors.
The Star Wars Encyclopedia is just that - thousands upon thousands of
alphabetized entries, usually containing a couple of paragraphs. This
tome details characters, ships, weapons, planets, robots ...
everything. Although it does have a lot of pictures, they are not very
useful to builders. Pictures are scenes from movies, and lots of
character faces.
Hope that helps ...
Shaun
